Chaplain to the New York City Fire Department, Fr. Mychal Judge was killed, becoming the first certified fatality of the September 11, 2001, attacks. The son of immigrants from County Leitrim, Judge was also well known in New York City for ministering to the homeless, the hungry, recovering alcoholics, people with AIDS, immigrants, the LGBTQ Community, and those alienated by society. The photograph of Judge's body being carried out of the rubble by the five men became one of the most famous images related to 9/11, dubbed an “American Pieta.”
