The City of Albany invites you to an Opening Reception for the Albany-Nijmegen Sister City Exhibit, “American Friendship From Across the Ocean,” on Wednesday evening, May 9, from 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM. The reception will take place inside the Rotunda of Albany City Hall.

*This event is FREE and open to the public!*

*Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served*

The Exhibit: The exhibit chronicles the liberation of Nijmegen, the Netherlands, by American military forces during World War II and the subsequent humanitarian shipment of food, clothing, medical supplies, and building materials sent by Albany citizens to Nijmegen in 1947 to help rebuild that city. The exhibit is a tribute to the historic bonds between our two cities that led to the Tulip Festival and continue to this day.

Speakers: The event will also feature remarks by Albany Mayor Kathy M. Sheehan, Paul Grondahl of the Writers Institute, and scholar Anja Adriaans of Nijmegen, who will talk about the Sister City relationship past and present between Nijmegen and Albany. Cordell Reaves, Historic Preservation Programs Analyst at NY State’s Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, and Mark Schaming, director of the NY State Museum, will speak about ways people can today experience the Capital District’s rich Dutch history.
