Tonight’s event will also feature a meet-and-greet with the Albany Empire, a special screening of the short documentary "Inside the Ring" by local media group Youth FX, free games for all ages, and “bites” from Aramark & local restaurants.

ALBANY, NY – Downtown Albany’s free summer film series, Bites Camera Action, kicks off TONIGHT on South Pearl Street with a screening of the film Invincible on the Times Union Center’s new 15-by-70-foot LED displays. Presented by the Downtown Albany Business Improvement District (BID), The Times Union Center, Albany County, the City of Albany, and sponsors Berkshire Bank, Fidelis Care, and SEFCU, tonight’s event will also feature a meet-and-greet with the Albany Empire, a special screening of the short documentary Inside the Ring by local media group Youth FX, free games for all ages, and “bites” from Times Union Center vendor Aramark and local restaurants. South Pearl Street will close to vehicular traffic from Beaver Street to Hudson Avenue at 6:30 PM; Inside the Ring will screen at 7:00 PM, with Invincible beginning at 7:30 PM.

This week’s feature film, Invincible, tells the inspirational true story of lifelong football fan Vince Papale, played by Mark Wahlberg. Papale was a South Philadelphia bartender who overcame the odds to play for the 1976 Philadelphia Eagles through open tryouts conducted by former Eagles coach and current Albany Empire co-owner Dick Vermeil, who is portrayed by Greg Kinnear in the movie. In recognition of Vermeil and the Albany Empire’s successful inaugural season, Empire players, dance team members, and mascots will be available for a special meet-and-greet starting at 6:30 PM. The Empire defeated the Philadelphia Soul on Saturday to clinch the #1 seed in the Arena Football League playoffs. The team enters the playoffs on the road on July 14 against the Washington Valor, and will host the Valor for Game 2 at the Times Union Center on Saturday, July 21.

Bites Camera Action will also highlight the work of Albany’s award-winning digital media program Youth FX, a non-profit organization that showcases the work of talented, diverse young filmmakers between the ages of 10 and 24 from historically under-served Capital Region neighborhoods. Directed by Darian Henry & Imani Peterkin, this week’s featured documentary, Inside the Ring, tells the story of Albany's youth boxing program through the words of longtime coach Jerrick Jones and the aspiring young boxers. Inside the Ring was screened at over 25 film festivals around the world and aired locally on WMHT Public Media's TVFilm Series. The short film took home awards from the following film festivals: CineYouth Chicago, DC Independent Film Festival, Derek Freese Youth Film Festival, Reel Expressions Film Festival, and Heartland International Film Festival.

Popcorn, water, candy, and soft drinks will be available for purchase from Aramark with local restaurants offering a variety of foods and beverages for patrons to enjoy. Free games for all ages will be provided by the Downtown Albany BID prior to the screenings, including cornhole, giant Connect Four, dominoes, and chess.

Bites Camera Action will run for six consecutive Monday evenings through August 13, with rain dates planned for August 20 and 27 in the event of inclement or dangerous weather. The six films featured on this year’s series were chosen by nearly 600 community members who voted in an online survey.
