Press Release: Daniel Mozzes Design Opens Showroom in Downtown

ALBANY, N.Y. The Downtown Albany Business Improvement District (BID) was joined by Mayor Kathy Sheehan, property owner Chris Pratt, and business owner Daniel Mozzes in officially welcoming Daniel Mozzes Design to Downtown on January 6 to 61 N Pearl Street – Steuben Walk #1. One of Downtown’s newest retailers, the business is the first to open in the newly renovated spaces in the Pearl Street Pub building (formerly the Jillian’s building). A celebration open to the public will be held tonight, January 6, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM.

Designing pieces that have been worn everywhere from Capital Region events to the Oscars red carpet, the new studio comes five years after Mozzes began working on his independent label. Relocating from a second-story showroom at 23 N Pearl Street, he chose the space after seeing the commitment to Downtown exhibited by building owners Chris Pratt, Euro Depoli, and Alessio Depoli and the opportunity to capitalize on the growth and investment in downtown Albany.

“Having a good variety of retailers is a critical component to attracting and retaining people who want to live, work, and play in Downtown Albany,” said Mayor Sheehan. “Welcoming a business like Daniel Mozzes Design will certainly contribute to unleashing downtown Albany’s potential and adding more vibrancy to Albany’s newest neighborhood.“

More than just designing fashion, Mozzes aims to boost the confidence of women whether they are headed to work or a gala with each piece he creates. Among the many memorable stories he has to share are designing a dress for a woman who’d recently undergone a mastectomy, and a gown worn to the Academy Awards by a nominee’s mother. Mozzes also creates everyday items for women including accessories and jackets; one-of-a-kind accessories are priced from $45 with dresses starting around $200. Clients have the ability to have a piece made or can buy off the rack.

“As we continue to experience the transformation of Downtown, entrepreneurs like Daniel Mozzes serve as a catalyst to attract additional businesses, residents, visitors, and employees,” said Georgette Steffens, Downtown Albany BID executive director. “Our District is largely comprised of locally-owned businesses and supporting them is a point of pride for many who live, work, and play here; Daniel Mozzes Design offers one more opportunity to experience all that our Capital City has to offer.”

Daniel Mozzes Design marks the seventh retailer to open within the last year in Downtown; in 2016, Fifth Tier Baking Studio, Lucky Cat Laundromat, Stacks Espresso Bar, Steuben Street Market, Trinbago Caribbean Restaurant, and Spa Wellington opened.

The renovation of the Pearl Street Pub building is the latest project for Pratt, Euro and Alessio Depoli, who also own The Capital Bistro, Public House 42, and Steuben Street Market in Downtown, and the Barrel Saloon in the Warehouse District. Renovation of the building was made possible in part through National Grid’s Main Street Revitalization Program, which provides matching grants to municipal and non-profit development corporations undertaking efforts to revitalize critical mainstreet/commercial corridors.

“In purchasing and renovating this building, Alessio and I strove to draw in retailers that would add something unique to the neighborhood,” said Chris Pratt. “We’re thrilled that Daniel decided to open here and be part of the excitement building around Downtown’s changing landscape.”

“Moving to a street-level space and being part of the transformation happening in Downtown are very exciting for me,” said Mozzes, who has studied and lived in Europe, South America, and North America. “I’ve had a lifelong fascination with clothing, and the idea of bringing to life something that was once a sketch led me to fashion design. The experience of seeing women put on my clothing and suddenly feeling so much better about themselves is a dream come true.”
