November 2021, Castle Island Motessori will relocate to the school's new home at 602 Broadway, right across the street from the beautiful Hudson River.

Enrolling children ages 3 through 12, we provide a beautiful natural setting for learning within a caring and stimulating child-led atmosphere. Castle Island families reside in Albany as well as in surrounding areas of New York’s Capital Region including: Troy, Clifton Park, Colonie, Delmar, Duanesburg, East Greenbush, Guilderland, Latham, Loundonville, Slingerlands, and Voorheesville. Parents are pleased with the natural wood furniture, classic artwork, and clean, safe classroom spaces filled with self-correcting, hands-on learning materials.

Our name

Castle Island was the name that French traders of beaver fur gave to a piece of land on the Hudson River where they built a stone chateau in 1540, one of the earliest European built edifices in North America.

Through the years, this island was renamed several times: Fort Nassau, Fort Orange, Martin Gerritse’s Island, Patroon’s Island, Van Rensselaer Island and, since the late 19th century, Westerlo Island.

Westerlo was connected to the mainland ending its time as an island in 1932, and the island’s original location was developed as the Port of Albany. We are pleased to represent our city’s history as the oldest chartered city in the US, and our school honors the name from its origin as Castle Island.
