Statement from Executive Director on Governor Hochul's State of the State and proposed investments

Downtown Albany BID Executive Director Georgette Steffens said:
"Governor Kathy Hochul's proposed $200 million for the revitalization of downtown Albany signifies an unprecedented commitment to the future of our District — one that stands as the most significant investment during my tenure as Executive Director of the Downtown Albany BID. This funding comes at a crucial moment for the core of our city, which, like downtowns across the United States, is grappling with ongoing economic challenges due to the rise of remote and hybrid work and other social issues.

Though our residential community continues to grow and remains a vibrant part of Downtown, and our world-class entertainment venues attract over one million visitors annually, it is critical that we continue to diversify our offerings. As the expectations for downtowns evolve, we must adapt and introduce new and inspired housing, attractions, and cultural events that celebrate our community.

These new funds allow us to meet the moment of our changing landscape and develop a capital city that reflects the greatness of New York State. We extend our gratitude to Governor Hochul for her support and look forward to working together to create a bright future for downtown Albany."
