1st Friday Albany

1st Friday is a monthly arts and culture event that takes place on the first Friday of every month in Albany. Since its beginnings in 2006, 1st Friday has showcased the diversity of offerings that our capital city has to offer. Events are free and open to the public.

The following Downtown locations are participating in the May 6 1st Friday:

African American Cultural Center

The African American Cultural Center of the Capital Region (AACCR) is committed to educating, enriching, and empowering resients of the Capital Region. Serving Albany, Troy, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Saratoga, Schoharie, Fulton and Montgomery counties. AACCR promotes awareness of the rich and vibrant history, contribution, and culture of African Americans through educational, cultural and performing arts, unique programs, activities and exhibits. The Center is a source of community renewal and investment.

Community Discussion | Mass Incarceration, The Criminalization of a People

The African American Cultural Center of the Capital Region will host a community discussion "Mass Incarceration, The Criminalization of a People" led by Wilbert St. Hilaire on May 4 beginning at 6:00 PM.  Free and open to the public.

Saturday Work Day at Grand Street Community Arts

Grand Street Community Arts will host a Saturday Work Day on April 30. Come help renovate the former St. Anthony's Church from 9:00 AM - Noon or 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM.

Projects include:

  • Painting the offices
  • Pulling nails
  • Leveling floor
  • Cleaning that room at the bottom of the stairs
  • Dusting Dusting Dusting

Grand Street Community Arts Open House

The Grand Street Community Arts will host an open house on April 30 from Noon-1:00 PM. Stop in and see what renovations are happening at the former St. Anthony's Church and find out how you can get involved in their programming.


Public Forum | Earning a Living Wage

The Albany Living Wage Compliance Committee is is holding a public forum on Earning a Living Wage on May 9 in Albany City Hall on the 2nd Floor from 6:00-9:00 PM.

The goals of the forum are as follows:

Dining Out For Life Returns April 28

Dining Out For Life, the annual dining fundraising event that raises money for AIDS service organizations, returns to the area on April 28. If you're looking to try out a new Downtown restaurant - or just wanted a good excuse to return to your favorite place - now is a good time. A portion of your bill - percentage varies by location - will be donated to the Alliance for Positive Health, which helps those living with HIV/AIDS in the community as well as funds cutting-edge health programs.
